Welcome!
I’m Katie Drury-Tanner, the voice within the stories. Born a Brit and raised a third culture kid in the U.S., I discover new layers of my identity within each place that I live.
A year in Honduras at 22 showed me I need to live in a place with variable seasons and teach in a school that aligns with my philosophy. Moving back to England for two years in my late twenties opened my eyes to the reality that I’m more American than I realized/realised (but still quite a bit English). Seattle stole my heart, increased my snobbery around coffee, expanded my confidence as a teacher-leader, and propelled me into parenthood while supported by an amazing village of friends. The Detroit area is an anchor, revealing the value of roots. It’s my ping-pong place, the home to which I’ve bounced back between adventures.
Now in Germany, the journey continues as my husband and I raise our own third culture kids. They love Marmite soldiers for breakfast, peanut butter and jelly for lunch, and feel quite content to have access to so much delicious Brot in Hannover. We’re finding our new village while getting to know our new city. In the meantime, it’s the stories of past and present that keep us connected to the homes we’ve left and the people within them.
